Acolytes

Worship Ministries

For more information about any of these ministries or to volunteer, contact St. John’s at (808) 239-7198. The current 6-month schedule is attached.

Eucharistic Ministers read the Old and New Testament lessons, lead the reading of the Psalm as well as the Prayers of the People, and administer the chalice during Holy Communion each Sunday. The readings are from the Episcopal Church lectionary and are available as handouts.

Eucharistic Visitors are lay people licensed to take the consecrated bread and wine right after a Holy Eucharist service to shut-ins and those in hospitals or who are ill or otherwise cannot come to church.

Acolytes help prepare the altar before worship services, lead the procession of clergy into the church at the beginning of services, assist the clergy at the altar during services, lead the recession out of the church after services, and help retire the altar when services are over. They light and extinguish the candles and ring the bells. Training is available.

The Worship Committee focuses on all matters related to church services. These include coordinating with clergy and scheduling the various lay ministries for Sunday and other services.

The Music Ministry is open to all who enjoy singing and making music. Our services include traditional and contemporary hymns in both English and Hawaiian. At St. John’s, everyone is in the choir! Some of us gather at 9:00 each Sunday morning to rehearse with our accompanist, to help lead the rest of the congregation with confidence. We also welcome anyone willing to play other instruments and lend their musical talents to our services for all to enjoy.

The Altar Guild is open to men and women who like to prepare the church for services. Members work in terms of two, who usually serve one day a month. Special duties include flower arranging and laundering the altar and communion linens. Training cheerfully provided.
